Seeds Started Thursday

Late Thursday night (probably early Friday morning), I pre-soaked and started about 8 varieties, left another 9 or so sitting in the fridge in their little soaking cups so I can plant them when I get home next Thursday. I tried to plant the ones that I have a more limited supply of, since I'd already soaked the seeds and didn't want to waste them.

HB (Hover Corte) has offered to check on the babies, altho I doubt any will have sprouted by tomorrow or Monday (1st check). I have planted Principe Borghese and Super Italian Paste for JS (10 seeds of Principe and 5 seeds of Super Italian. I know that I got Harvard Square planted, and I'm not solid on what else got put into the tray so far. Guess I'll find out when I get back to it and add the rest to the list here.

Class: Lawn and Lawn Substitutes

Okay, so I don't quite get how the head of the Master Gardener Program (at UC Davis) has a passion for turf grass, given its hoggish ways with water, nutrients, etc. We were given a scorecard for grass varieties (cool or warm season variety? pros & cons of them.) While the material was fairly straightforward, it just didn't imbue me with a passion for the stuff.

The Alaska MG program's approach was more practical and less theory -- but I actually think I came away from the class in Fairbanks being knowledgeable enough to help people with lawn problems. I'm not sure that I'm any better prepared to deal with California lawn problems from this class.

On the other hand, there was an interesting portion of class that was taught by a local Master Gardener on lawn substitutes, and that was a lot more interesting. In fact, some of the "lawn substitutes" are really just less manicured mixed-species layouts that I'd consider to be acceptable places to hold a picnic, sit and read, etc.

Oof, late to be starting for 2007 season

Even later to be buying seeds, yet that's what I'm still doing. Somehow this season got a jump on me. HoverCorte wants me to start Berkeley Tie Dye (BTD), Vorlon, and New Big Dwarf for him (along with assorted others he knows I'll have to pawn off come 2 months or so from now), so he'll get them.

JDS wants definitely wants Prue (an heirloom dark pink-red culinary tomato) and Principe Borghese (classic Italian variety used for sun drying or dehydrating), and probably Super Italian Paste and Russian 117. I'm trying to tempt him with "Romeo", a giant Roma tomato I got seed for from Peters Seeds and Research (PSR).
